Six Nunavut hamlets get $3.7M for better water treatment
Funding from federal, Nunavut governments marked for improving water facilities, studies into treatment
Six Nunavut communities will share a combined $3.7 million from the federal and territorial governments to improve water and wastewater treatment.
The hamlets of Arctic Bay, Grise Fiord, Pond Inlet, Rankin Inlet and Sanikiluaq will share $2.4 million for studies supporting the future opening of five new water treatment facilities and improving access to potable water in those communities, the Department of Intergovernmental Affairs, Infrastructure and Communities announced in a news release Wednesday.
Arviat will receive $1 million for its lagoon expansion planning project. That will fund planning and design for rehabilitation and expansion of the community’s wastewater treatment facility, said department spokesperson Jean-Sébastien Comeau.
As well, Rankin Inlet will get an additional $300,000 for several planning studies related to its wastewater treatment plant, to identify future projects that can increase the facility’s ability to treat and manage wastewater.
“This partnership with Nunavut will lay the groundwork for the construction of future water and wastewater facilities, building on our government’s commitment to protecting the health of Canadians and ecosystems through modern water and wastewater services,” said department minister Dominic LeBlanc in the release.
