Skills Nunavut team headed to national competition
On April 12, Skills Nunavut hosted 70 students and advisors from 10 communities across Nunavut to compete in our sixth annual Territorial Skills Competition.
After participating in skills clubs in their home communities during the school year, representatives from each school are invited to travel to Iqaluit to showcase their skills and compete for an opportunity to represent Nunavut at the National Competition in Quebec City June 1 to June 4.
This year we had skills clubs in the following communities: Kugluktuk, Gjoa Haven, Taloyoak, Rankin Inlet, Whale Cove, Arviat, Sanikiluaq, Qikiqtarjuaq, Baker Lake, Coral Harbour and Iqaluit.
Skills Nunavut is the territorial branch of Skills Canada. All Skills branches are non-profit and rely heavily on volunteers and support from organizations within the community.
We are very lucky in Nunavut to have such strong support for the advancement of skilled trade and technology careers for our youth. Dozens of teachers and community members across the territory volunteer their time every week to lead clubs in cooking, baking, graphic design, TV-video, hairdressing, jewelry making, carpentry, aesthetics and photography, workplace safety and prepared speech.
Skills Nunavut is also grateful for financial and in-kind contributions from organizations all over the North.
If you are interested in having your organization become a sponsor or if you are an especially skilled Individual who would like to learn more about how to start a club in your community, please contact Amanda at amandak@skillscanada.com.
You can also follow us on Facebook or Twitter to learn about our upcoming events throughout the Territory.
Thank you again to everyone who participated in or helped run the TSC this year, and congratulations to Team Nunavut 2011. We’ll see you at the nationals in June!
