Cases of gastroenteritis, commonly known as the stomach flu, are on the rise in Kugluktuk, according to the Government of Nunavut.
Gastroenteritis is “not uncommon” this time of the year and is easily spread, said an advisory issued Wednesday by the Department of Health. It didn’t say how many cases were reported.
Symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, fever and diarrhea. Those who come down with gastroenteritis can rest at home with plenty of hydration. If symptoms worsen, people should get help from the health centre, the advisory said.
The department encourages people to avoid illness by washing their hands, keeping surfaces clean, drinking plenty of water, and avoiding sugary drinks as well as unnecessary physical contact.
