RCMP have charged a man in relation to Tuesday’s shelter in place advisory in Clyde River.

Travis Kautaq, 28, was charged with uttering threats and possession of a weapon for the purpose of committing an offence, police said Thursday in a news release.

“A distraught man who was reported to have a firearm and was threatening to shoot police” sparked the incident, the release said.

Police located the suspect in a residence and began negotiating with him, said RCMP spokesperson Cpl. George Henrie.

RCMP sent out an alert Tuesday at about 7 a.m. asking everybody in the hamlet of approximately 1,200 people to stay inside their home while police dealt with an “ongoing situation” involving a firearm.

“At approximately 8:15 a.m., efforts to negotiate were successful and the man surrendered to police peacefully,” Henrie said in Thursday’s release, adding the shelter in place order was lifted once the suspect was in custody.

Kautaq has been released from custody with a court appearance scheduled for Feb. 24 in Clyde River.
