Significant water build-up discovered Sunday during excavation work under the road near Iqaluit Square has forced the city to extend this weekend’s closure of Queen Elizabeth Way in front of NorthMart.

“As a result, work is now focused on identifying and repairing the source of the water,” said city spokesperson Geoffrey Byrne in a news release about the issue.

Contractors were in the process of a culvert installation when the water was discovered.

The road was already closed in the area to accommodate the Amarok Hunters and Trappers Association’s 50th anniversary celebrations Saturday on the Nakasuk School grounds.

Now, the closure will remain in effect until the end of day Wednesday, Byrne said in the release.

A water main break is believed to be responsible for the water.

“This situation is expected to delay completion of the project. The city is working with the contractor to address the issue as efficiently as possible,” Byrne said.
