Team Nunavut basketball coaches are proud of the effort their players are putting into their competitions at the Canada Summer Games, regardless of where they finish in the final standings.

“The athletes showed what Nunavut is capable of,” said Olivia Tapatai, an assistant coach with the women’s basketball team. “Our training camp was successful — they used what we showed them and had a great attitude the whole time.”

On Tuesday, Team Nunavut women’s basketball team is scheduled to take on Newfoundland and Labrador and the men are scheduled to play New Brunswick, both starting shortly after 6 p.m. ET.

So far, both teams have no wins and three losses.

“We won’t have the official standings until after our game against Newfoundland tonight,” Tapatai said.

Off the court, more fun and adventure awaits the athletes.

“It’s a great atmosphere here at the summer games. Everyone is so welcoming to Team Nunavut basketball,” Tapatai said.

As for Team Nunavut’s remaining indoor sports, the Nunavut men’s and women’s indoor volleyball teams will see their first competition on Aug. 19, and the wrestling team’s first matches are on Aug. 21.

The Canada Summer Games, being held in St. John’s, N.L., offers livestream coverage of competitions on its website.
