The next generation witnesses the MMIWG closing ceremony

Two young Inuit girls watch the Tikinaagan (or cradleboard) ceremony, which prepared the final report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls so it could be passed to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday, June 3. The girls sat with Inuit elder Meeka Arnakak at the back of stage for the entirety of the closing ceremony, as the elder tended to a qulliq throughout the event. The children playing in the background brought a little lightness to the event, and for her final words a First Nations elder noted that the girls having such carefree fun was “the way it’s supposed to be” for young Indigenous children.
