The dos and don’ts of recycling

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

Pop and beer cans, tin cans and certain plastic containers can be recycled. Refer to the city’s recycling brochure or Web site at www.iqaluitrecycles.org.

Non-recyclable items include glass, Styrofoam, paper, cardboard, juice boxes, wood and all food waste.

Cans and plastics should be rinsed and placed in blue transparent bags provided in the city’s recycling kit. Replacements can be purchased in stores for less than $5.

All clean recyclable items may go in one bag.

Place blue bags in your outdoor garbage box. Recyclables are scheduled for pick up every two to three weeks.

Blue bags are transported to the landfill and are stored in sealift containers. This month, summer students are sorting through 18 sealift containers and dividing the bags into piles of clean pop cans, plastic bottles and plastic bags. The sorted items will be baled, compacted and shipped south.

The City of Iqaluit runs the recycling program. The Iqaluit Recycling Society oversees education and awareness.
