The smell of keen spirit
I must congratulate the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation of Iqaluit for being spiritual. I note the title “Is Tausunni healthy in the east” in the letter to the editor of the Nunatsiaq News (September 10, 1999).
Tau is the root word for tausunni. The literal translation of the word tausuuni is “smell of a live person” in the language of the shaman or angakkuq.
Tuunngaqsunni would tranlate to “smell of spirit.” When CBC chose the name tausunni, they knew the true meaning of the word. They understood the powerful spiritual message that the word sends to the angakkuqs and the believers who are living in Nunavut today. It is the recognition of Inuit spirituality by CBC.
