The incumbent vice-president of Qikiqtani Inuit Association will face two challengers in the upcoming elections Dec. 9.

Levi Barnabas, QIA’s vice-president and a former speaker of the legislative assembly, is seeking another four-year term against former MLA for Tununiq, David Qamaniq and Jaco Newkingak of Qikiqtarjuaq.

Nominations closed Nov. 8. QIA published the official list of candidates on its website.

The QIA elections will run alongside the presidential elections for Nunavut Tunngavik Inc.

QIA is an organization that promotes the rights of Inuit in the Qikiqtani region.

Along with the vice-presidential elections, Inuit beneficiaries in Qikiqtani will choose between Adamee Itorcheak, Jason Kaernerk and Cornelius Kadloo Nutarak as the association’s secretary-treasurer.

Voters will also elect community directors in Arctic Bay, Grise Fiord, Pangnirtung, Qikiqtarjuaq and Resolute Bay.

I’ve never seen him accomplish anything, and I don’t mean it in a harms way. Levi doesn’t need to be voted in anymore.

Adamee is the best choice for Secretary-Treasurer. He’s an honest, straight-shooter, and we need people like him who are money-smart. It’s time he gets elected for this position.
