Time zone change bad for hunters

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

I strongly agree with Frank Pearce’s letter, (Single time zone unhealthy for east, Nunatsiaq News, September 10, 1997).

His comments about changing working hours for government activities makes more sense than the whole Nunavut territory being in one time zone. Why should we in the East with the majority of the population lose two precious hours of daylight for the sake of only a handful of the population of Nunavut?

Going back two hours will greatly change our livelihood for the worse. Not only will our working habits change, tempers will flare up because of shorter daylight during working hours.

Hunters who normally hunt for mammals in the winter would have to leave at 1:00 or 2:00 a.m. instead of 3:00 or 4:00 a.m. to take advantage of daylight at the floe edge, and spend unnecessary nights on the land in the late summer and early fall, because the tides will be two hours late as well.

Ever since the NWT came into being, we have been doing fine with the time differences. Why change now?

I urge all clam diggers in Iqaluit to make a big fuss as well, this will change your habits too!
