Try on a ‘CAMIK’
IQALUIT — The Ottawa-based Inuit Art Foundation has developed a new educational tool on the North that uses slides, videos, an audio cassette, CDs, photos and texts to get its message across.
CAMIK, the Canadian Arctic Multimedia Information Kit, is designed to give educators and anyone else interested in learning about the North a quick, but thorough look at the region and its people.
“This reflects the growing interest of the South in the North,” said Marybelle Mitchell, the foundation’s executive director. “We see our job as educators, too. It fits into our mandate. CAMIK will broaden and enhance the understanding of art, because you can’t understand the art unless you understand the people.”
The Ontario Ministry of Education and Training recently decided to recommend CAMIK as a learning resource for its high school courses on native and social studies.
