Tundra Trot marathon races around Kuujjuaraapik

The Kativik School Board held its first “Tundra Trot” marathon last weekend.

For three days, teams representing every school in Nunavik took part in foot races around and through Kuujjuaraapik.

Three boys and three girls were chosen to represent each school in three distance races of three to four kilometres.

School teams had been practicing since August.

The “Tundra Trot” was conceived by Allan Brown, THE KSB pedagogical counsellor for physical education, who hopes the event will motivate and increase student involvement in school programs, help students change to a healthy active lifestyle, and foster self-esteem.

The KSB received funding from Indian and Northern Affairs Canada, Air Inuit and the Kativik Regional Government for the “Tundra Trot.”

The KRG Recreation Department was on hand to scout athletes for its Arctic Winter Games program.
