The married members of Twin Flames, a popular Indigenous musical act, appear to have gone their separate ways.
Chelsey June and Jaaji Okpik, who is part Inuk from Nunavik, announced they have separated in their “personal lives,” in a Facebook post Aug. 8. The post did not say whether the separation means their musical partnership has also ended.
The band did not respond to emails from Nunatsiaq News seeking comment.
On Facebook, the award-winning duo thanked their fans for supporting them and listening to their music as they “move forward on different paths.”
Fans responded with comments such as “Twin Flames has delivered so much beautiful music. It is a shame that the duo will be going their separate ways,” and “Thank you so much for being awesome! My little one Hillary will never forget you both!!! Thank you for dedicating [to] her the song nunaga!”
News of the breakup comes less than two months after Okpik was charged with seven sex-related offences alleged to have occurred in his home community of Quaqtaq in Nunavik, including sexual assault, sexual touching of a young person under his authority and forcible confinement.
The charges have not been tested in court.
In June, Nadine Touma, a Montreal-based defence lawyer representing Okpik, provided a statement on Okpik’s behalf, denying the charges, noting they are alleged to have occurred 25 years ago.
“He will vigorously contest these charges in court as soon as possible,” Touma wrote in an email.
Twin Flames has been performing for more than 10 years. The duo has released five albums and headlined last year’s Aqpik Jam music festival in Kuujjuaq.

Not a good band anyway. I don’t care.
Never liked their music anyway. Bye
Gonna be ok?
The biography posted on their website is all in past tense now so they’re definitely over safe to say also every venue and festival cancelled them
The flute is so annoying. Won’t miss em.
I prefer music with lyrical depth.
