RCMP say two hunters have died in an accident about 12 kilometres southeast of Resolute Bay.

At 11:30 p.m. on June 6, police received a report that a youth, who had been travelling with two adults on one snowmobile, walked to the community and said they had fallen through the sea ice, according to a Monday news release.

Resolute Bay Ground Search and Rescue assisted the RCMP. One 49-year-old male was found deceased. The second adult, 35, could not be located.

In the early morning hours of June 7, about four hours after the initial report, the search was called off, and the second person is presumed to have drowned, the release stated.

RCMP are now investigating the incident with Nunavut Coroner Services.
