RCMP are investigating after two Kinngait churches were damaged in early morning fires over the past three days.

In the first incident, a fire was reported at Living Water Church at 6 a.m. on Jan. 6, causing damage to the building, police reported Monday.

Then at 6:53 a.m. on Jan. 9, a fire was reported at St. John Anglican Church and that building also sustained damage.

In a news release Monday, RCMP said both incidents remain under investigation but did not release damage estimates. Kinngait firefighters extinguished both fires.

There is little that remains of St. John Anglican Church following the fire, Kinngait senior administrative officer Mike Hayward told Nunatsiaq News.

He said residents are worried the community’s one other church could be targeted next.

“Somebody’s going after churches, I guess,” Hayward said.

RCMP are asking anyone who sees suspicious activity to report it to the Kinngait detachment or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

A secure online tip can be sent at www.nwtnutips.com or by texting ‘NWTNUTIPS’ plus your message to 274637 (CRIMES).

So you can drive around all night looking for arsonists. So you can solve all our dog problems.. so you can stop all the drug trafficking.. so you can control people that go out at night.. maybe that will make us isumatuju like you.. namimiutaugavilli so I can look up what your town has been through and base your character off of that.. just because it’s a few people that have had incidents it doesn’t mean it defines the whole town 😒

If we are interested in the chain of causation that may have led to this, it seems a good place to start is beyond questions of what damage has been inflicted on the church, to what damage the church has inflicted on the community.
