Two Qikiqtani communities elect QIA directors

Moses Appaqaq, Charlie Inuarak will join Inuit org’s board

In byelections held on Monday, Jan. 20, eligible Inuit voters in two Qikiqtani region communities chose people to represent them on the Qikiqtani Inuit Association’s board of directors.

In Sanikiluaq, Moses Appaqaq, 73, an artist who served as an MLA in the 1980s within the old Northwest Territories legislature, was elected as QIA director.

Here are the Sanikiluaq vote counts, as provided by chief returning officer Paul Okalik:

Moses Appaqaq: 66
Mick Appaqaq: 42
Elijassie Kavik: 39
Joe Arragutainaq: 14
Lucy Uppik: 9

Total votes cast: 170

In Pond Inlet, veteran community leader Charlie Inuarak, 72, won the community director position over two other candidates.

Here are the Pond Inlet vote counts:

Charlie Inuarak: 79
Katherina L. Pudluk: 52
Cornelius Kadloo Nutarak: 10

Total votes cast: 141.

QIA did not provide voter turnout estimates for either election.
