Two drown while water-skipping snowmobiles
Risky snowmobiling trips over thin ice and open water continues to claim the lives of Nunavummiut this month.
In Baker Lake on June 12, police received word that two men had gone missing, last seen about 25 kilometres east of town.
Later that day, RCMP and volunteers pulled the two dead men from the water. They are Allistair Peryouar, 28, and Aoudla Pudlat, 54.
The men were believed to be “water-skipping,” or hydroplaning a snowmobile over open water. Police remind residents that snowmobiles aren’t designed for this purpose.
Earlier this month, a search for two Kugluktuk hunters was called off because of dangerously thin ice conditions, who are also believed to have died while water-skipping.
