Inuit film projected on snow at Ottawa’s Winterlude
The Asinabka Festival’s third annual snow-screening event featured Inuit film this year as part of Ottawa’s Winterlude. Projected on a wall of snow, Asinabka played films like Nyla Inuksuk’s “Finding Home,” Ericka Chemko’s “Tide” and Qajaaq Ellsworth’s “Nippaq” from Feb. 1 to 3. The event was called “Unikkaaqtuarniq: Stories from the North.” In past years, the snow-screening featured films from a variety of Arctic Indigenous groups around the world. The Ottawa festival’s winter theme fits with a northern focus, explained co-director Howard Adler. The Asinabka Festival highlights Indigenous film, and stories exploring Indigenous issues, through year-round small-scale programming as well as an annual film and media festival in Ottawa.
