A 38-year-old man faces a variety of charges after “unruly” behaviour caused a flight to be rerouted, say Nunavut RCMP.

The flight was en route from Rankin Inlet to Naujaat Tuesday afternoon when it was forced to turn back due to the passenger’s behaviour, the RCMP said in a news release.

The passenger was drinking hand sanitizer during the flight, and he began “yelling, swearing and being threatening toward the staff” after it was confiscated, according to the news release.

The passenger has been charged with causing a disturbance and resisting arrest, among other charges. He was also arrested for an unrelated outstanding warrant.

The passenger has also been charged with failing to comply with the instructions of the flight crew under the Aeronautics Act, as well as consuming an intoxicating liquor on board, not served by the flight crew, under Canadian aviation regulations.

He was due to appear in court at 1 p.m. Wednesday.

The CPHO and others who make decisions to keep Beer and Wine Stores open during pandemics while other “non-essential” services are closed are sending the wrong message. If you state that this has to be open because of a person’s struggles with alcohol and the dangers associated with not being able to acquire alcohol- you have to give people a pass on consuming hand sanitizer on a flight. He/she has a drinking problem that they developed, but it is now supported and enabled by the GN. Class Action Lawsuit

I would throw away the key and let the person be behind bars on what the federal laws permit related to the person’s action.

Airline staff in Nunavut need to do a better job vetting passengers before boarding. So often drunks leaving Iqaluit airport that can barely stand up by themselves.

Where does it say he was drunk before boarding? It says he drank hand sanitizer on the plane and became unruly.

So the criminal becomes the victim. How about the passengers and crew that had to put up with the goof. If this done anywhere else it would be a long time before this dude ever got on an aircraft again, if ever. There is no excuse for causing this inconvenience to others aside from endangering lives. How would anyone on board be able to predict how far this idiot would go. Congrats to crew and passengers for coming out on the right side of this.

So if I understand the discussion. The criminal is the victim. You have to be kidding.
