TV watchers across the country will be able to tune in to Canada’s first Inuit-language channel on cable and satellite starting Monday.

Uvagut TV launches on basic cable packages nationwide on Jan. 20, after receiving approval from the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission in October.

The channel was started in 2021 and is operated by Nunavut Independent Television, an Inuit-owned non-profit founded in 1991.

“One of the first solely Indigenous language networks in the world, this is truly a historic moment for Inuit and Indigenous communities, and all Canadians,” a news release NITV issued Friday said.

Uvagut TV currently broadcasts Inuktut programming, current affairs coverage, children’s shows, films and documentaries, and special events to 600,000 subscribers on Shaw, Arctic Co-op and local satellite channels across Canada.

Once Uvagut TV is added to basic cable packages, the company expects it will reach more 10 million viewers across the nation.

“To celebrate our launch on January 20, Uvagut TV will share a full programming lineup of some of our most popular and beloved programs from our archives,” the release said.

“We are so grateful to the many people and organizations across Canada who made this happen with your support, hard work and advocacy.”

A spokesperson for NITV could not be reached for comment Friday.

Best of luck, hoping it will be successful.
I wish I could afford Cable or Satellite dish, I’ll have to give up Internet and/or cell service for this.
