Volunteers recognized
Louis Tapardjuk, Nunavut’s minister of culture, language, elders and youth, last week recognized exceptional volunteers at a reception in Iqaluit.
This year’s group award went to the planning committee for the the 2003 Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention Conference in Iqaluit. This 15-member team spent more than 1,000 hours over two years to organize last spring’s conference.
Carla Punshon of Rankin Inlet received the adult award for her work with the Girl Guides of Canada.
Joanasie Benjamin Arreak of Pond Inlet was given the elder award for his commitment to the Anglican Church. Arreak has also been teaching the community’s children about respect, helping others and how to be role models for more than 20 years.
Helena Wortman of Cape Dorset received the Youth Award for her involvement in two soccer teams, her positive attitude and solid work ethic.
