The City of Iqaluit is reminding people to drive carefully Tuesday with the first day of school bringing students and school buses back onto the roads.

“Be alert and mindful during dim mornings and dark afternoons,” the public service announcement said.

“It can be difficult to see pedestrians.”

It’s illegal to pass a school bus that has lights flashing and its stop sign out, the announcement said. Drivers on both sides of the road must wait until the flashing lights are turned off or risk a $1,000 fine and four demerit points.

The announcement also reminds drivers to slow down in school and playground areas, especially during student arrival and dismissal times.
