Way paved for street names
IQALUIT — A list of Iqaluit’s future street names was given to the city council this week.
Neville Wheaton, Iqaluit’s fire chief, said the list contains more than 70 street names, all of which reflect Arctic themes: northern animals, polar explorers, famous Nunavummiut, and regions of the territory.
The list has also been sent to the language commissioner so the Inuktitut names can be checked for accuracy and spelling.
Wheaton said that once council approves the names the city will seek a contractor to produce street signs. English and Inuktitut names will be written on both sides of each sign, he said.
Wheaton said the signs should be in Iqaluit by the end of the September.
