Special to Nunatsiaq News

To celebrate Nunavut Day, Nunatsiaq News invited readers to share what makes their corner of the territory special to them.

Growing up; 1995.

Kids out and about; Adults playing cards.

Some smoking a cigarette while others are getting drunk.

Most days are the same,

While others are long;

How could we know what was going on?

The truth lies behind closed doors;

Where we could never know the truth.

Some say it’s bad, but others say it’s good.

When you don’t know from right and wrong,

It is hard to understand.

For the rich get it all; while the poor fights for it.

Violence, Anger; Hunger too,

We are the kids that endured you.

For most do not know right from wrong.

This is the part of our land you don’t hear along.

For us to understand the land; we need to grow up with the fam.

As the world evolves, our sacred ancestors will fall.

Because he who does not worship the everlasting of the son; they will vanish into the midnight sun of the Nunavut land.

With a mix of sun and snow;

Throughout the year we make it work.

Jobless: Homeless; or an addict too!

We stand by our word and make it too!

For all we are not racist and sexist too;

That is why we stay true to you.

For love has a language, in different ways we feel;

This is us, that they don’t tell you.

We live, we love and we hate too; for we do what we see and become what they are.

This is all that we have and all that we are.

And for years more.
