The RCMP in Pangnirtung is investigating a fatal snowmobile collision that killed a 27-year-old woman Wednesday afternoon.

Police were called to the scene around 2:40 p.m., after a snowmobile “travelling at a high rate of speed” collided with a parked vehicle, according to a news release the RCMP issued Thursday.

The woman, who was operating the snowmobile alone, was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision, police said.

“The lone driver was transported to the health centre where she was later pronounced deceased,” the release said.

Please take care of yourselves, and my condolences to all involved. Can the inuit orgs start up a helmet safety program please, helmets are costly but the inuit orgs could drive the price down or give away for free to all snowmobile and 4 wheeler drivers. This item of safety is dearly needed.

A problem is that it’s not as comfortable dressing for the cold and having a helmet on too. It’s needed for safety but people will be resistant to it.

Driving safely and considerately when in town would help prevent more injuries.
