Woman accused of stealing from Iqaluit hockey association pleads not guilty
Karen Dunphy charged with theft of over $5,000 stemming from missing funds
A woman accused of stealing from the Iqaluit Amateur Hockey Association has pleaded not guilty.
Karen Dunphy, 38, entered the plea in an Iqaluit courtroom Monday during a brief appearance before Justice Christian Lyons, alongside lawyer Victoria Perrie.
Perrie said Dunphy is applying to Nunavut Legal Aid for a lawyer.
Dunphy was charged in April with theft over $5,000, from the Iqaluit hockey association. The theft is alleged to have occurred between Feb. 19, 2022, and May 31, 2022, according to court documents.
A 2021 Facebook post from the hockey association listed Dunphy as the organization’s fundraising chairperson for that season.
Dunphy faces three other unrelated charges — fraud under $5,000, forgery and identity fraud — from an alleged incident in November 2023.
Dunphy’s next court date is Oct. 28.
Having a hard time understanding why she’d qualify for legal aid….. even I was denied legal aid
