An employee at Nunavut’s Meadowbank mine was seriously injured in a workplace accident on Monday, May 6.

The mine’s owners, Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd., said the employee was working at the tailings storage area when he suffered “a serious leg injury” late in the afternoon.

That area of the mine site is a series of dams built up to store unused rock, sand and silt filtered out through the mining process.

The mine company wouldn’t provide more details on how the accident happened or the extent of the employee’s injuries.

The employee was medevaced to a hospital in Winnipeg for treatment, where he remains in stable condition, the company said.

The Workers’ Safety and Compensation Commission will launch an investigation into the accident, as Agnico Eagle will do internally.

The company said it was sending psychological support to the mine site to support other staff members there.
