Young Nunavik male faces charges after gun standoff

Police officer unhurt by shots

A male under 18 faces charges of attempted murder and discharging a firearm at a police officer, related to an August 11 incident in Kangiqsualujjuaq.

At about 2:50 a.m. on Aug. 11 the Kativik Regional Police Force responded to a call during which a young man opened fire. He then barricaded himself in residence.

The young man turned himself at 5 p.m. that day, after the arrival of a team from the Sûrété du Québec provincial police force.

The KRPF constable was unhurt, SQ spokesperson Marie-Josée Ouellet said.

SQ investigators were called to Kangiqsualujjuaq from Rouyn-Noranda to investigate the incident.

According to statistics tabled last spring at the Kativik Regional Government council meeting, gun calls in Nunavik had risen from nine in 2007 to 11 in 2008 and 14 by March of 2009,

At least two other incidents in which firearms were involved have occurred in Kangiqsualujjuaq this past summer.
