The Nunavut RCMP Major Crime Unit has charged a youth with second-degree murder in connection to a man’s death in Baker Lake.

This comes two months after police charged 28-year-old Richard Niuqtuq of Baker Lake with second-degree murder for the same incident.

Shortly after 5 a.m. on April 2, Baker Lake RCMP responded to a report of an unresponsive male.

The victim, 45-year-old George Narkyagik, was taken to the health centre, where he was pronounced dead, an April news release stated.

The death was deemed suspicious and the investigation was taken over by the Nunavut RCMP Major Crime Unit.

On April 6, police charged Niuqtuq. The youth was later identified as a suspect and arrested on June 3, police said Friday in a news release.

The accused was brought before a justice of the peace and remanded into custody. Due to a publication ban under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, the youth cannot be identified.

The case returns to court June 23 in Iqaluit.
