A youth is charged with second-degree murder in the death of a woman over the weekend in Salluit.

The woman died at the local health centre after she was found in a home Sept. 15, unconscious with several injuries, said Jean-François Morin, deputy chief for Nunavik Police Service.

The accused was detained at the residence.

The investigation has been transferred to Quebec provincial police, also known as Sureté du Québec. They arrived in Salluit at around 9 a.m. on Sept. 15.

“There is a technician in crime scenes that went there with investigators to analyze the scene,” said Audrey-Anne Bilodeau, spokesperson for the Quebec police, in a phone interview conducted in French.

Bilodeau said the victim was in her late 40s. Her identity was not released.

Police have not released the gender or age of the accused, who appeared in court Sept. 15.

Their next appearance is scheduled for Monday afternoon.

Youth violence is getting out of hand in this country. Gangs are recruiting youth to do their dirty work knowing damn well they will get nothing more than a slap on the wrist.

Time to get rid of the protective measures under the Youth Justice Act and start charging youth as adults for indictable offenses.

The schools have to do the heavy lifting that parents won’t or don’t do, starting with structure and discipline in kindergarten. That becomes increasingly difficult as undisciplined kids grow older.
