Zach Kunuk to receive Order of Nunavut
"[His] creative vision has brought Inuit culture and language to a global audience"
Famed Igloolik filmmaker Zacharias Kunuk will become the next recipient of the Order of Nunavut.
Nunavut’s highest honour, established in 2010, is handed out each year to individuals who have made an exceptional contribution to Nunavut’s cultural, social or economic well-being.
“This year’s recipient of the Order of Nunavut is an internationally-renowned artist whose creative vision has brought Inuit culture and language to a global audience,” said Joe Enook, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, on Tuesday, March 12.
Kunuk is the co-founder of Igloolik’s Isuma Productions, He rose to fame in 2002 as director of Atanarjuat, his Inuktitut-language feature film that won the Camera d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and a number of other screen awards.
Kunuk is already the recipient of the Order of Canada and a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Kunuk will be presented the Order of Nunavut at the spring sitting of the Legislative Assembly, which gets underway on May 28.
