The Government of Nunavut and the Nunavut Housing Corp. say they plan to build 3,000 new homes in Nunavut by 2030.

Housing Minister Lorne Kusugak and Premier P.J. Akeeagok made the announcement in Rankin Inlet Tuesday morning.

The new units will be built through a partnership with Nunavut Housing Corp. and NCC Development Ltd. called Igluliuqatigiingniq, which means building homes together.

“With housing continuing to be one of the most urgent challenges in Nunavut, the announcement of Igluliuqatigiingniq, or the Nunavut 3000 strategy, is a welcome addition to our communities and will make a measurable difference in the lives of Nunavummiut,” Kusugak said in a news release.

A 2020 report from the Nunavut Housing Corp. said the territory is in need of more than 3,000 units to accommodate housing demand.

The Government of Nunavut has committed to building 1,000 units through its Katujjiluta mandate.

How can they possibly make an announcement like this without explaining who is paying for it? This has to be over a billion dollars.

I think delusions of grandeur are the only thing NHC’s leadership is capable of making.

It’s government money and the government is most likely lying again.

I’m assuming the GN needs NCC to build them and then lease them back to NHC to avoid procurement policies mandated by the Nunavut Agreement. And I guess NTI won’t complain because they get to control all the income generated through those leases. So not only do they contribute zero to the public service, but now they’ve found a way to profit from it?

I could swallow it if it meant meaningful economic benefits for Inuit, but the Nunavut Trust has really only been used to fund the operations of the four Inuit Orgs (NTI and RIAs) and their subsidiaries like QC and NCC.

If this is actually true and I have my doubts. But 3000 homes will most like be split between Iqaluit, Rankin Inlet and Cambridge Bay, as its been the past decade. Little to none for other communities.
