The Nunavut Housing Corporation has launched a non-emergency phone number to make it easier to get information from the corporation and local housing authorities.
The organization announced the number this week in a news release.
The new Housing Contact Line is available toll-free at 1-844-413-9355 and is headquartered in Arviat.
Nunavummiut across Canada can call the number to speak to a representative who will assist with housing-related questions, said Ben Crossley, housing corp. spokesperson, in the release.
Callers can follow up on existing work orders, check in on the status of an application, ask questions about their account status, get contact details for local housing organizations or to learn more about the housing corp.’s programs and services.
The service is offered in Inuktitut and English.
The line will be available Monday to Friday during the following regional hours:
- 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET for the Qikiqtaaluk region.
- 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. CT for the Kivalliq region.
- 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. MT for the Kitikmeot region.
The Housing Contact Line is for non-emergency inquiries only. For emergencies, Nunavummiut should call the emergency service department in their community, Crossley said.

I have been making work orders on mold in the bathroom and waiting 1 and a half year still waiting.
So instead of whining on Nunatsiaq News, be proactive and call 1-844-413-9355
Why are you talking to someone that way.? This person isn’t whining. They are legitimately frustrated because they have been waiting and doing things through the proper channels for the last year and a half, and they’ve been given the runaround. Will this phone number actually result in changes? Time will tell. Don’t mock people who have already been following the proper procedure.
Did NHC forget the other two official languages?
Hey Paul maybe you can recommend the 2-3 unemployed fluent Inuinnaqtun speakers who would take this job? To my understanding there is already vacant positions at the GN for proficient Inuinnaqtun speakers, so why bother creating some new position to remain vacant……
There is a GN responsibility under the Official Languages Act to provide that service, Not mine. Perhaps ask NHC to put in more of an effort.
In Canada, English AND French are the two official languages.
You might want to check what the official languages are IN Nunavut
Doh!
So instead of whining on Nunatsiaq News, be proactive and call the Official Languages Administration (867) 975-5080.
Touche LOL
This should have been created when Nunavut Government was created? Keep them accountable.
Nhc may need a call center with 100 staff to handle incoming calls.
I understand why Arviat would have an Inuktitut-speaking employee since the language is prevalent in the community. However, I am curious if the NHC in Iqaluit also has someone fluent in Inuktitut who can communicate with clients, such as tenants.
Could the NHC in Iqaluit provide information on whether it practices and implements Article 23 when hiring individuals for vacant positions within its headquarters?
Why just Iqaluit?
Excellent idea creating a help line. One problem the people chosen
to do the work. Will they actually answer the phone calls. Or
just ignore them. Like so many other GN offices.
