Qulliq Energy Corp. made a brief appearance in Iqaluit court Monday to face several charges under the territory’s Safety Act.
The charges are in connection to an incident at Naujaat power plant last July that resulted in the death of QEC employee Noah Paniyuk.
John D. Cliffe appeared virtually in court, acting as an agent for the Nunavut government.
The nine charges against Qulliq Energy Corp. were filed after an investigation led by the Workers’ Safety and Compensation Commission.
They include failing to take all reasonable precautions to ensure the safety of every person at the worksite, failing to sufficiently and competently supervise work, and failing to implement safe work procedures, as well as other offences.
“QEC is committed to learning from this tragedy to ensure every employee returns home safely at the end of each day,” said Ernest Douglas, president and CEO of Qulliq Energy Corp., in a news release shortly after the court proceeding was adjourned.
The news release emphasized the corporation’s co-operation with the investigation.
Qulliq Energy Corp. is scheduled to appear in court again Sept. 29.
