Nunavik’s school board has a new commissioner to represent Puvirnituq.

Muncy Novalinga was sworn in as a member of Kativik Ilisarniliriniq’s council of commissioners on Dec. 2, the board announced Friday.

The council is the highest authority at the school board. It is made of 14 public representatives — one from each Nunavik community — who serve with a three-year mandate.

Novalinga was acclaimed to the position in an election in Puvirnituq. He succeeds Theresa Etok, who resigned, the board’s news release said.

Kativik Ilisarniliriniq provides educational services to all Nunavik residents in Inuktitut as a first language and in French and English as second languages. It operates 18 primary and secondary schools and six adult education centres across the region.

Congratulations on the acclamation. Kativik Ilisarnilriniq would do well to hire a few teachers or at least work in concert with orgs and begin an adult Inutituut language program. It would be a huge plus to the Inutituut use to strengthen it. The influx of professionals, teachers, nurses and doctors, 90% would sign on. There is much to lose if the millions being allocated by Avataq and Makivvik, Quebec for the language is not put to good use. Get organized and off your @sses please.
