Seven Iqaluit residents have come forward in the hopes of filling a vacant seat on Iqaluit’s city council.
The City of Iqaluit announced the list Monday in a news release.
The seven candidates are:
- Barry Blackmon
- William Glenn
- Amoudla Kootoo
- Kuthula Matshazi
- Maher Natsheh
- Noah Papatsie
- Trevor Tayor
Councillors will review the applications June 23 and decide on their new colleague.
Nunavut municipalities are not allowed hold byelections to fill vacant council seats, according to the Nunavut Elections Act. Instead, council can choose from candidates that were not elected during the previous municipal election or to put out a call for candidates.
Council voted unanimously April 14, to launch a call for candidates.
Former Coun. Sam Tilley resigned from council in March, citing personal reasons.

There’s some people here who don’t need to bother putting their name in the hat, I’d imagine Council will make their decision based solely on identity politics like last time.
And if they pick who I expect they will, they will be looking for a replacement for that person within a year.
