Kilikvak Kabloona is no longer the chief executive officer of Nunavut Tunngavik Inc., says Hannah Uniuqsaraq, the organization’s director of self determination.
Uniuqsaraq will be the acting CEO while NTI figures out its “next steps,” she said in an email to Nunatsiaq News when asked about Kabloona’s departure.
She didn’t say why Kabloona left the organization responsible for ensuring obligations under the Nunavut Agreement are upheld.
“We thank Kilikvak for her contributions to the organization, Nunavut Inuit and wish her well,” Uniuqsaraq said. “NTI’s work will continue without interruption.”
Nunatsiaq News reached Kabloona by phone on Thursday afternoon, but she declined to comment on her departure.
Originally from Baker Lake, Kabloona started working as NTI’s CEO in 2018.
Before her tenure at NTI, Kabloona was the Government of Nunavut’s associate deputy minister responsible for quality of life – a position that focused on responding to the territory’s suicide crisis.
Prior to that, she worked for several cabinet ministers at the legislative assembly.
Kabloona took a brief leave of absence to run as the Liberal candidate in the 2025 federal election. She lost to Lori Idlout, who ran for the NDP, by 41 votes. Earlier this year, Idlout crossed the floor of the House of Commons to join the Liberal caucus.
The CEO’s responsibilities included making sure the goals of NTI’s board are met and representing the organization, among other tasks.
Kabloona’s departure came a week after Nunavut Inuit beneficiaries elected Gloria Uluqsi as the new president of the organization,
On Tuesday, Kabloona represented NTI in Ottawa at a meeting of the Senate’s committee on Indigenous Peoples, where senators studied the duty to consult Indigenous peoples on projects and decisions.
