Annual contest seeks youth entries across the country to name a new batch of canine recruits for the RCMP

By Nunatsiaq News

A Baker Lake youth has the honour of naming one of 13 German shepherds in the RCMP’s annual “Name that Puppy” contest.

John Tunguaq named the canine recruit Bruno.

RCMP Nunavut announced the winner June 19 on social media.

For his win, Tunguaq received a certificate, a photo of the puppy, a stuffed German shepherd and a water bottle from the RCMP Police Dog Service Training Centre.

Every year, the RCMP training centre in Innisfail, Alta., holds a contest for children between the ages of four and 14 to name police dogs. One winner from each province and territory is chosen.

The RCMP invited youth in February to submit names that started with the letter “B.” Names are chosen from a new letter of the alphabet ever year.

Last year’s Nunavut win went to Quentin Qammaniq, who named a puppy Ash.

Asking Inuit to name an rcmp dog is insult enough, considering the relationship between Inuit dogs and the rcmp…but to tell Inuit that they can’t even use Inuktitut names is just dumb. Name 1 word in the Inuktitut language that starts with B
