Etua Kaukai, the mayor of Kangirsuk, has died.

“Etua was somebody that always cared for moving the people forward through economic development and he wanted to see them succeed,” said David Tordjman, general director of Nunavik Investment Corp., Wednesday in an interview.

The Nunavik Investment Corp., where Kaukai served as the board’s vice-president, issued a statement on Facebook Saturday about his death.

The exact date and cause of Kaukai’s death have not been announced.

Nunavik Investment Corp. is a non-profit organization provides funding and loans to local entrepreneurs in Nunavik. Tordjman said Kaukai had served on the board for more than 10 years and had been vice-president for about five years.

”He was a kind and gentle soul that just cared and wanted to be with people and just help,” Tordjman said.

“It seemed that was his purpose.”

Kaukai was elected mayor of Kangirsuk on Nov. 6, 2024, for a three-year term.

The Kativik Regional Government said it is awaiting official word from the Municipality of Kangirsuk on details surrounding Kaukai’s death.

The municipal council will meet at the appropriate time to decide how to fill the vacancy, said Denis Abbott, KRG’s spokesperson.

Kaukai was the father of Collin Kaukai, who died in early June along with his partner Emma Munick after falling into a river on their way to a fishing derby.
