A Clyde River man previously convicted of shooting into an RCMP officer’s home is wanted after a firearm incident this week prompted a community-wide shelter-in-place alert in the hamlet.
Norman Natanine, 25, is facing charges of possession of a firearm while prohibited, dangerous operation of a vehicle, breach of probation and uttering threats, the RCMP said Friday in a news release.
Clyde River RCMP received a complaint Tuesday evening about a distraught man driving an ATV while carrying a firearm, the release said.
Police told residents at about 10 p.m. to shelter in place while they responded. When they found Natanine, he agreed to surrender his firearm and himself, but only ended up surrendering the firearm, RCMP spokesperson Sgt. George Henrie said in an interview.
Natanine remained at large.
There was no physical confrontation between RCMP and Natanine, Henrie said, and the shelter-in-place order was lifted at about 4 a.m. Wednesday.
Natanine is also wanted on a separate warrant issued June 3, for an alleged assault and three counts of breach of probation.
This isn’t the first time Natanine’s actions have led to a community-wide lockdown.
On Dec. 17, 2020, Natatine assaulted his then-girlfriend and shot into an RCMP officer’s home while the officer’s wife and six children were inside. Residents were told to shelter-in-place as that incident unfolded.
Nunavut RCMP describe Natanine as an Inuk man, 5-foot-4, about 170 pounds, with black hair, brown eyes and a stocky build.
Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to contact Clyde River RCMP or their local police service.
