Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. has named Navarana Beveridge its new chief executive officer.
The Inuit rights-holding organization in Nunavut announced the appointment Monday in a news release.
Beveridge’s hiring fills a vacancy left by Kilikvak Kabloona, who left in June, one week after beneficiaries elected Gloria Uluqsi as the the organization’s new president on May 27.
“Gloria has just gotten on as NTI’s new president,” Beveridge said in an interview Tuesday. “I met her while she was campaigning and thought she was a very interesting, grounded leader, very genuine in her wanting to make a difference in the communities and working for Inuit. And that really appealed to me.”
“Navarana understands our organizations, our communities and the issues that matter to Nunavut Inuit,” Uluqsi said in the release. “She brings strong leadership experience, but just as importantly, she understands that our work must remain grounded in the people we serve.”
Beveridge said she wanted to join NTI’s leadership because she’s optimistic about Nunavut’s future.
“I think NTI is at a very exciting point in time, where there’s a lot of opportunities and possibilities to do good things,” the she said.
Beveridge was born and raised in Greenland and spent 17 years working at the Qikiqtani Inuit Association, most recently as their senior director of strategic planning. In 2021, the Kingdom of Denmark appointed her as its honorary consul in Nunavut.
She speaks four languages — Inuktitut, English, Kalaallisut and Danish. Throughout her career, she helped negotiate the Mary River iron mine’s Inuit Impact Benefit Agreement and also oversaw the creation of the Qikiqtani Inuit Association’s research and training centre in Pond Inlet, which had its grand opening at the end of September.
Uluqsi said in a news release on Monday that the new CEO “brings strong leadership experience, but just as importantly, she understands that our work must remain grounded in the people we serve.”
Beveridge is expected to officially begin on Oct. 13.
