Iqaluit’s only controlled crosswalk is disabled following a two-vehicle collision last week.

The lighted crossing is adjacent to the intersection of Niaqungusiariaq Road and Queen Elizabeth Way.

One of the crosswalk’s two light poles fell Oct. 8 after the incident, which halted early afternoon traffic for 90 minutes. No injuries were reported.

Residents should exercise caution while using the crosswalk, said acting city spokesperson Donna Keenainak in a public service announcement issued Wednesday morning.

Drivers are also asked to be cautious when approaching the intersection.

The busy intersection sits between the Qikiqtani General Hospital clinic entrance and the Sailijaaqvik Boarding Home, which sits at the southeast corner of the intersection.

The city’s public works department did not immediately provide a timeline for repairs.

The crosswalk was installed in 2024.
