Nunavut lowers gas and fuel oil price
“When we can maintain, or lower the price…we will”
Nunavut homeowners will pay less to heat their homes this winter, following the Government of Nunavut’s Oct. 26 announcement that the price of diesel and gasoline is being lowered effective Nov. 1.
Home heating fuel is slated to drop by five cents per litre.
Nunavummiut will also see a reduction in the price of gasoline, which will go down by 10 cents per litre.
But airlines will pay more to fly because the cost of Jet A1 fuel purchased in Nunavut will rise by 10 cents per litre.
“Our government is doing its part to reduce the overall cost of living,” said Premier Eva Aariak in a GN news release. “In these tight fiscal times, our government will work harder than ever to make life more affordable for Nunavummiut.”
Earlier this year, the GN’s department of Community and Government Services pre-purchased 73 million litres of fuel for this year’s annual resupply, about 50 per cent of the diesel and gasoline used over a 12-month period. By buying early, the GN says it saved money and is passing along those savings “directly to Nunavummiut” through a reduction in diesel and gasoline prices.
“When we can maintain, or lower the price…we will,” said CGS minster Lorne Kusugak. “This practice exemplifies the commitment of our government to supporting strong viable communities in the face of the ever increasing high cost of living.”
