Members of the Nunavut legislative assembly will hold a special leadership forum at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow, May 28, to choose a new Speaker from among themselves.

The new Speaker will replace the late Joe Enook, who died at an Ottawa hospital this past March 29.

The proceedings of the leadership forum will be open to the public, and anyone may observe them from the visitor’s gallery inside the legislative chamber.

The proceedings will also be broadcast live on local community cable stations, on Bell’s direct-to-home satellite service on channel 513, as well as on Shaw’s classic channel 289 or Shaw’s new lineup channel 489.

The assembly will also livestream the proceedings here.

Enook had served as the MLA for Tununiq since September 2011, when he won the seat in a by-election. He was last re-elected to the seat in the 2017 territorial election.

Elections Nunavut will fill the vacancy left by Enook’s passing by conducting another by-election scheduled for Sept. 16, 2019.

Tomorrow afternoon, at 1:30 p.m., the new Speaker will preside over the spring 2019 sitting of the second session of the fifth legislative assembly, which is scheduled to run until June 6.
