A fire at a 10-unit Iqaluit apartment building Monday afternoon sent one person to hospital with minor injuries and forced the other residents to be temporarily evacuated.
Firefighters and RCMP officers responded to the fire at building 306 on Siku Crescent in the Lower Iqaluit area shortly before 1:40 p.m., said Geoff Byrne, a City of Iqaluit spokesperson.
Two fire trucks, two fire command vehicles, two city bylaw enforcement trucks, one ambulance and four RCMP vehicles were at the scene.
The emergency response blocked off parts of Siku Crescent near Nipisa Street, forcing traffic to divert around the area.
The fire was contained to a second-storey apartment, and all units in the building were evacuated. Byrne said the fire was brought under control just after 1:55 p.m. and declared over shortly before 3 p.m. when the other residents were allowed back into their homes.
Police entered the building with firefighters after the flames were out.
The injured person was transported to Qikiqtani General Hospital with minor injuries, Byrne said.
Nunavut RCMP has not responded to a request for comment.
