Idlout Korgak, 32, faces second-degree murder charge
(updated at 11:30 a.m.)
RCMP in Rankin Inlet have laid a homicide charge in connection with a vehicle collision July 9 that killed Paul Kataluk, a resident of the community.
Kataluk, 52, died after he was struck by an all-terrain vehicle. The driver of the ATV fled the scene.
Following an investigation, RCMP on July 10 charged Idlout Korgak, 32, of Rankin Inlet, with second-degree murder and failure to remain at the scene of an accident.
Police say the two men knew each other.
But until an investigation is completed, police will not say if Kataluk was riding on his ATV at the time of the collision.
By the time first responders arrived on the scene, Korgak had fled the scene and Kataluk had no vital signs.
Kataluk was declared dead shortly afterwards.
More details of what happened at the hit and run will emerge shortly, said RCMP Cpl. Denis Lambe, when police finish taking witness statements.
Korgak, who appeared before a justice of the peace July 11, remains in custody.
An appearance for Korgak at the Nunavut Court of Justice has yet to be scheduled, an RCMP news release issued July 11 said.
