Thanks to tips from the public, police in Edmonton have identified the body of a woman who was found at a city golf course March 31.

The woman has been identified as 19-year-old Kerry Takkiruq, originally of Gjoa Haven.

Her death is being treated as “suspicious.”

Police were able to make the connection after they released photographs of two hooded sweatshirts which were found on the woman.

Edmonton police say that tips provided to them are confidential, but police force spokesperson Noreen Remtulla said “it was certainly helpful having the media post those photos.”

The Edmonton Sun reported that Takkiruq had moved from Nunavut to Edmonton to live with her mother and brothers about three years ago, although the teen still has many relatives living in Gjoa Haven.

According to Takkiruq’s bebo.com profile, she was the mother of a baby boy named Joseph and a former student at Edmonton’s Jasper Place High School.

An autopsy did not reveal the cause of death and police are now waiting on results of toxicology tests.

Anyone with information regarding Takkiruq’s death should contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
