Federal government renews energy retrofit program
Homeowners can receive up to $5,000
POSTMEDIA NEWS
The federal government is renewing the popular ecoENERGY Retrofit program that offers homeowners incentives to improve their home’s energy efficiency.
Last week, Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver announced that until March 31, 2012, homeowners could be eligible to receive grants of up to $5,000 to make their homes more energy efficient.
The extension, which first came to light in the June federal budget, encourages homeowners to undertake energy retrofits that result in significant energy efficiency by providing financial assistance. The program requires energy audits to qualify.
In the previous version of the program, which expired last year, more than half a million Canadians participated, saving an average of 20 per cent on their energy bills, according to the government’s website. Homeowners who took advantage of the program in the past can participate again.
New this time around is the requirement that participants register with the program before scheduling an energy audit and proceeding with renovations.
