Arviat RCMP collect two illegal alcohol shipments in two days
“The Arviat RCMP would like to thank residents for their assistance”
Acting on a tip from the public, police in Arviat were able to stop two separate shipments of alcohol from entering the community, an RCMP news release issued July 28 said.
Members of the RCMP received information that a woman was returning with alcohol to Arviat — a community where alcohol is prohibited.
Police went to the airport where they found the woman had eight 1.75 mL bottles of liquor and 27 cans of beer in her possession, with an estimated street value of $4,135.
Kailah Kalluak, 24, has been charged and will appear Oct. 24 before the Nunavut Court of Justice in Arviat.
Two days later, on July 22, police received another tip that a woman was returning to Arviat with alcohol.
Police again went to the airport, where they found the woman had six 750 mL bottles of liquor, 14 375 mL bottles of liquor and three 1.75 mL bottles of liquor with an estimated street value of $4,500.
Jocelyn Konek, 30, has been charged and will appear Oct. 24 before the Nunavut Court of Justice in Arviat.
“The Arviat RCMP would like to thank residents for their assistance in this investigation and request community residents continue to report anybody involved with the importation of alcohol because together we can make Arviat a safe community,” the news release said.
